Making Flour

Grinding Flour and Grains in your high performance Blendtec or Vitamix blender can help you save space in your kitchen by avoiding the cost of a grain mill. You are able to turn a bag of rice into a bag of flour by using a Blendtec blender or Vitamix blender. The advantages to home made rice flour compared to store bought is that they’re no preservatives or additives. Any and all seeds and grains can be placed into a Vitamix or Blendtec and ground into fresh flour or powder. Some grains include; Oats, Wheat Berries, Almonds, Flax Seeds, Spelt Berries, coffee beans, etc.. the list goes on.

My name is Frank Musa, I’m writing this review, you can watch me in the video below. If you have any questions about how to make flour in your blender or how the Blendtec vs Vitamix blender models compare for grinding grains, please leave your comments below.

This review compares Blendtec Vs Vitamix Blender Models and shows you the differences between the textures between the different blenders for flour.  We show you which blender we think is the best for to make flour. The Results from the blend off are below.

Fresh Flour

  • A bonus to your Blendtec and Vitamix high speed blenders are they can make fresh flour, not only that, they can grind any grain, seed or nut, into powder. They are so perfectly designed that every little seed and nut is forced to go through the big powerful stainless steel blade designs these blenders offer come with.
  • This blend off revolves around grinding rice into flour, but that is just an example for the Blendtec and Vitamix blenders capabilities. You can grind coffee beans into coffee powder, wheat berries into wheat flour, spelt berries into spelt flour, popcorn kernals into cornmeal, granulated sugar into powdered sugar.. the list goes on.

Can you use the same jar or container to make flour?

  • The Simple answer is YES you can use the same Vitamix Container and the same Blendtec Jar to grind your grains, here is the thing. The jar made by Blendtec and the container made by Vitamix are made from the same material, it’s a BPA FREE Co Polyester Eastman Tritan, very strong, non-cancerous, material, but if you do a lot of grinding, you will notice the Blendtec Jar or Vitamix Container get cloudy and scratched.
  • We recommend buying an extra container or jar for the grinding part of your blender usage. Vita mix sells a special dry goods container which has a dull blade which they recommend for grinding flour and grains, and Blendtec has a nice 64oz container that works really well.

Blender Models Used in the Blendtec vs Vitamix Rice Flour Comparison
For the Rice Flour Blend Off we used the Vitamix G Series 750, Vitamix C Series 500, Vitamix S Series S50, Blendtec Designer 725, and the Blendtec Classic 575 blender models.  We put 4 cups of rice in all the Blender Models and ran the blenders on their highest speed for 60 seconds. The Results are below.

Vitamix Legacy G Series 750

The Vitamix Legacy G Series blender is the quietest blender and easiest to use of the Vitamix blenders. It took down the rice really fast and the flour consistency was light, fluffy, and soft. Nicer textured flour than the rest of the Vitamix line.

  • The speed dial on the G Series line is very responsive to use and very powerful, the motor is a 2.2hp motor which is more powerful than the motor on the C Class of Vitamix blenders which has a 2hp motor, and the S Series personal blenders which has a 1hp motor.
  • The big decision in calling the G Series Vitamix Legacy blender the winner was not just because the flour had the best texture, but this blender is super quiet. Much quieter than the Blendtec blenders and other Vitamix blender models.
  • The Low Profile Container has a big 4 inch blade with a wide base which blends and grinds ingredients quickly and efficiently. The Low Profile container adds a powerful touch to the Vitamix Legacy series blenders, it’s bigger and better, ingredients are able to quickly get absorbed into the blades and blended.
  • As you can see in the video the texture it produced was very very good. Soft, light, and fluffy. Great for baking recipes.

Vitamix C Series blenders

The Vitamix C Series had no problem grinding the rice into rice flour, but it wasn’t as fine, soft, and fluffy as the Vitamix Legacy G Series.

  • The Vitamix C Class uses an older model container which is there original tall 64oz container.
  • You are able to purchase a Low Profile Container for the Vitamix C Series blenders if you wish to do so and there is also a Vitamix Special Dry Goods Container that Vitamix sells that is specifically made for grinding grains, the special dry goods container has a dull blade attached to it which is recommended by Vitamix.
  • The taller narrower 64 oz container took longer, and wasn’t able to grind the flour as quickly as the Vitamix G Series 750; furthermore, the texture was NOT AS FINE as the Low Profile Container, but still would be fine for making flour and powders and grinding seeds and nuts.

Vitamix S Series blenders – FAILURE

The S Series failed miserably, I’m Sorry Vitamix Company People if you’re reading this. It overheated during the blend and the ingredients we’re not able to get pulled into the blades, we needed to use a tamper to physically make the rice go down into the blades and get ground; furthermore, the texture was not fine and there was larger particles left behind, you can see it on the plate in the video. No bueno!

Blendtec Designer 725

  • The Blendtec designer has proven itself to be the best jar for juicing, good for soups and smoothies, but for grinding grains, it falls a little short.
  • The Wildside Blendtec Jar left larger pieces behind but did manage to grind majority of the rice into a nice flour.
  • We think the larger thick 4 inch blade design doesn’t catch all the fine rich particles as much because of the wider base.
  • The texture was good from the designer but not as good as the Classic standard Blendtec 64oz jar or the Vitamix Low Pro Container.
  • We gave the Blendtec Designer 3rd place for the Best Blender for Grinding Flour, getting beat by the Vitamix G Series and Blendtec Classic 575.
  • We recommend the Blendtec standard 64oz jar for grinding grains because it has a narrower base and that seemed to work better because less rice particles got left behind.

Blendtec Classic 575

  • The Original Blendtec Classic Series blender model worked well for grinding grains, not because the blender is better but because we used the 64oz standard jar.
  • The Blendtec 64oz standard jar was able to grind the rice into flour very well and produce a finer softer consistency than the Blendtec Designer blender.
  • The Blendtec 64 ounce Jar is great to have as an extra jar for grinding grains and the consistency you get is very fine fluffy and soft, more fine than the Blendtec Wildside Jar can produce.
  • Blendtec advertises that you can use ONE JAR for all your blends which you can, but we like the standard 64oz jar for grains.

Best Blenders for flour between Blendtec vs Vitamix blender models

If you trying to decide on which blender to go with let me just say that all the Vitamix blender models old and new are able to fit that new Low Profile Container on so it doesn’t really matter, of coarse the nice new features on the newer models are nice and the newer upgraded motor is nice to have because it’s quieter, but all the blender models can achieve the same results if you put the low pro container on there. Except the S Series line, they have there own containers.

  • Vitamix recommends that you use their special dry goods container for grinding grains but you don’t really need it if you don’t do a lot of grinding.

Blendtec blenders come with 2 jar options, the Wildside jar and the standard 64oz jar, for grains we discovered that the standard 64oz jar works better, you can put either blender jar on any Blendtec blender model.

In Conclusion

From our tests we recommend the Blendtec Classic 64 ounce standard Jar for grinding grains and the Vitamix Low Pro Container for grinding grains. Also, if you want to have an extra container for grains the Vitamix “Special Dry Goods” Container, which is specifically designed for grinding grains, works great, and the standard Blendtec container works great. It’s better to have an extra container or jar for grains because if you do a lot of grinding the jar or container will get scratched up and cloudy.
